Hey freelance friends, forgive me if you’ve seen this already, but as it’s the first big product about freelancing that I’ve put out there, I’m still jigging around with excitement and so I’m sharing it here as a post (and of course, if you’ve seen it and liked, do consider sharing it).

One of the things that I really struggled with as a freelancer was money. Talking about it, negotiating it, figuring out how to earn more - it felt like this was some secret magic that other people knew how to do and I didn’t. Over my years of freelancing though, I’ve realised there is no magic - it’s about confidence, understanding the market, learning how to negotiate. In other words, it’s business.

Many of us still feel like talking about money is gauche and tacky. But I firmly believe we should change that. Especially if we’re women/minorities who weren’t raised to be financially literate. And while money might be a status symbol for some, I’m willing to bet that for most of us, money means freedom. It might mean having more time to spend with your kids rather than shushing them when you’re sending work emails in their presence; it might give you more time with ageing parents; or maybe you just need more time to live life outside work.
