Thanks for writing this. I’m still at this stage. My podcast is the only place I feel totally ‘safe’ and it shows from the feedback I get. I do like Substack but Insta / LinkedIn etc is hard work for me. Part of it for me is also my friends seeing a different side of me.

Oh that's so interesting about your podcast feeling like your safe space! I watched a piece of a Mel Robbins podcast yesterday about her view that social media isn't really for your friends or your old coworkers but for connecting with people who resonate with what you have to say, and although not everyone would agree, for me it rings true. I keep in touch with close friends through whatsapp etc and use social work.

Oh wow that’s powerful! Thanks for this. Missed it despite following her for years. I totally get what she says with my logical brain, but it takes a bit of a mindset shift.

Found your honesty so helpful, thank you for writing this! Feeling comfortable with sharing work/ personal brand really is such a learned habit (and one that I'm still getting to grips with myself) - I guess it's the same as how we don't think Sainsbury's is bragging by constantly running TV/ social media commercials, we just accept that they need to tell us how good a supermarket they are in order to stay afloat, and the same goes for any 'business' no matter how small :)

Oh I'm so glad - it wasn't an easy one to publish so just had to take a deep breath and do it haha, a bit like me posting on social media in the beginning. And yes I agree with you - viewing ourselves as the businesses that we are (and less as ethereal craftspeople for whom any suggestion of money is anathema) is super helpful. You still need to offer high-quality services, but if you can't even get people in the door then there's clearly a visibility gap.
